Yeast + Urine = Plastics??

Dr. Mark A. Blenner, a professor at Clemson University

Science and Technology: Dr. Mark A. Blenner, a professor at Clemson University is working on a chemical process that will be able to turn urine into polyester polymers and essential fatty acids, such as Omega-3. The process involves the use of various strains from the Yarrowia lipolitica yeast bacteria (developed by Dr. Blenner as well), which can be grown by using nitrogen and carbon. The purpose for this experiment is for future astronauts to be able to make tools and have a way to produce nutrients while in space by simply recycling their own urine and exhaled carbon dioxide (CO2).
