The scientific community mourns loss of "Museu Nacional of Rio de Janeiro"

One of Brazil’s oldest museums, founded in 1818 and holding an impressive collection of invaluable scientific and cultural artifacts caught fire and burned to the ground. So far firefighters have not reported any human casualties, as the fire happened after hours in the main building. The burned-down Museu Nacional building was home to some of South America’s oldest human fossils, such as 11,500-year-old Luzia. It also housed Latin America’s largest collection of Egyptian mummies and artifacts, and an immense collection of invertebrate specimens (Bugs/arthropods/mollusks, etc.)
