Chad's President Idriss Déby has died of his injuries following clashes with rebels

Just one day after provisional election results projected he would win a sixth term in office, Chad's President Idriss Déby has died of his injuries following clashes with rebels in the north of the country.

Curfews have been imposed and the government has officially been dissolved and a military council led by Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno will govern for the next 18 months.

The 37-year-old general is the son of the late Chad President Idriss Déby.

Free and democratic" elections are expected to recommence following the transition.
