Babies are by far the cutest things on the green planet and talking to them creates in us a sense of joy, love, and peace. Without even thinking about it, we start to "Baby Talk" when we speak to them, but why? Why do we alter our voices, change our facial expressions and make those weird sounds when talking to a baby.
Well, here's the rundown!
We baby-talk to grab the attention of the child. We know how children are easily distracted and so as a means to command their attention, we alter the sounds of our voice and pitch to keep them engaged.

We baby-talk to convey love and affection. It is a way for adults to let the baby know that we love them and the interaction we are having with them. We want to express the depths of that love in a way that we feel best relates to them and so baby-talk.
We baby-talk in imitation of what we saw growing up. There is no telling how many centuries baby-talk goes back to. Maybe since the time of Jesus, Mary used baby-talk as a way to express love and affection for him, but it's a well-established trend that can't be denied.
We baby-talk to make the baby happy. We love seeing the smile on a child's face when we talk to them and so altering has proven successful in getting that cute little baby to crack a smile.

We baby-talk to help the child build their basic vocabulary. The attention-grabbing method is extremely successful in helping children develop their forms of communication. Will the baby say mama or first? It will more likely be the word that grabs the child's attention the most on a consistent basis.
